The 18th ammendment was still a year away, so Prohibition was not yet federal law, however, moonshiners still made headlines. A “Liquour Car Crashes in Spotsylvania” was highlighted above the fold in the broadsheet newspaper. A “sevenperson Cadillac, laden with [illegal] liquour was found abandoned at 5 a.m. seven miles from Fredericksburg” near the southern Fauquier border. The driver was thought to be making a “rum run” from Richmond.
• May 8, 1929 — “Dunks Green Captures Va. Steeplechase” read the headline in the Fauquier Democrat. “An estimated crowd of 10,000 racing enthusiasts gather on the green hills over Clovercroft [still a working horse farm on the Springs Road west of Warrenton], the estate of Baldwin D. Spilman Jr. to witness the eighth annual Virginia Gold Cup.”
