Undaunted by having to pay out $100,000 when Ann Stem’s Saluter won the Virginia Gold Cup and England’s Marlborough Cup in 1997 — hence capturing the first World Timber Championship and accompanying bonus — Count Konrad Goess-Saurau has plans not only to continue the Gold CupMarlborough Cup marriage but to expand to a $1.65 million four-race series next year.
The Gold Cup is May 1, the Marlborough Cup May 23.
The original WTC was the brainchild of Goess-Saurau and Great Meadow founder Arthur W. Arundel, who joined to bring timber steeplechasing to a worldwide fan base.
