Derby Contenders At A Glance
• General Challenge: Trained by Bob Baffert who’s won the Derby the last two years in a row. Big, strong capable. Won Santa Anita Derby last out. • Prime Timber: Another Baffert horse. Second in Santa Anita Derby. Would not be an upset if he won. • General Meeting: A third Baffert trainee, this one a filly. Bred to get the distance, but behind top two. • Silverbulletday: A filly that’s better than the other horses in the field, but Baffert was hesitant to run her. May go in the Kentucky Oaks instead. If she’s in the Derby, watch out! • Stephen Got Even: Long-striding, capable colt. Trained by Nick Zito who has won this race twice. Five weeks between races a question mark. • Adonis: Impressive winner of the Wood Memorial last out. Trained by Zito. • Menifee: Won Blue Grass last out. Trained by great horseman, Elliott Walden. Lightly raced, though, and may not have the seasoning to handle the Derby scene. % • Vicar: Very tough, consistent colt. Trainer Carl Nafzger won with only previous Derby starter. • Worldly Manner: Well-bred American who started his career in California before being sold for $5 million last year. Spent winter in Dubai, and has only one non-competitive race under his belt in last eight months. Top jockey Jerry Bailey is aboard, but connections are probably asking too much. • Charismatic: Impressive winner two weeks ago. Trained by Wayne Lukas, who has won Derby three times before. Probably a little behind the others in his preparation. One should recall that in an evenly matched field like this year’s, racing luck — or the lack thereof — may be the most important ingredient. A bad post position, a slow start, a wide trip around the turns can easily defeat any of these top contenders.
