Professional jockey Joe Aitcheson sought in the ‘69 race an unprecedented seventh Gold Cup victory, but he was the first to defect as he pulled his horse up lame after the fourth fence. Ernest Oare’s Zoomer, ridden by Warrenton’s Jerry Fishback overjumped the 10th fence and turned upside down in a spectacular fall.
Other important news from 1969 included a frontpage report that “marijuana use proves harmful to health.”
• May 10, 1979 — “Sam Son Of A Gun Claims Win In 54th Virginia Gold Cup” read the Thursday headline. Amateur timber specialist Charlie Fenwick Jr. steered the gelding to win before a “crowd of more than 10,000 that waited to hear the official result following two claims of foul on the winner by jockeys of [second-placed] Juggernaut II and Sandi’s Presley against” the winning rider.
