Also, I feel very strongly that allowing fox hunting to “bring back the quail” is a ridiculous rationalization. Fox hunting with guns will not “bring back the quail,” as your biologists must surely know.
Our property once supported maybe ten large coveys of quail; with a dog, you could easily flush 30 grouse a day — all at a time when we also had plenty of foxes. Our grouse disappeared almost overnight in mid-October 1974. Quail started to decline during the 1976-77 season (28 bagged), and hit bottom in 1979-80 (none bagged).
