The Rappahannock planning commissioners zipped through a short agenda at last Wednesday’s regular monthly meeting and adjumed to a work session to continue review of new maps prepared as part of revisions to the county’s zoning ordinance.
The commissioners opened with a final look at a proposed amendment which would allow shooting ranges by special permit in an agricultural zone. Commissioner Werner Krebser recalled that after considering a 1,000 foot setback distance, the planners had endorsed 500 feet as the minimum distance from a range to an adjoining property line. In changes to the proposed amendment (which the commission had recommended to the board of supervisors for adoption), Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner added a provision allowing the board of zoning appeals to increase or decrease that 500 foot minimum, Krebser said. “They sure shouldn’t go below 500 feet. . . Undue pressure on the BZA could result in a decrease to 100 feet. That would defeat everything we’ve tried to do,” he said.
