Breeches or jodhpurs are worn by all, fitting closely, but not so tight as to restrict movement. A smooth fit is essential, especially in the area of the inside of the leg, so as not to crease and cause chafing.
The soft tailored shirt worn under the jacket is completed with the stock tie, which is fastened with a gold safety pin. In recent years, prefolded and even pre-tied stocks have come on the market, together with stock pins in various attractive designs.
These are all very well and good if one plans on wearing this type of outfit just to the hunt breakfast. But the practical reason behind the wearing of the stock, and the safety pin fastener, is its usefulness in an emergency. The stock, which is approximately three feet long and made of linen or a good quality cotton, serves not only to keep the wearer’s neck warm, but in case of a fall or injury to horse or rider, can be used to secure a splint, be made into a tourniquet, or used as a leg bandage, secured with the elegant but simple safety pin.
