The sport of foxhunting is unique in many ways, not the least being the tradition which surrounds it. Possibly riders could be just as comfortable and well protected wearing casual clothing, rather than the “correct" attire prescribed for a formal hunt. But the traditional clothing worn while foxhunting not only looks handsome, but serves several useful functions.
The “pink” hunting jacket, which is actually a scarlet colored wool coat, was so named after a British tailor whose name was Pinque. This coat, as well as the black or navy blue wool hunting jacket worn by the members of the field, was designed not only for warmth, but for protection as well.
