Boca Bird
“Here comes the ‘Bird’!” has been a familiar exclamation by spectators at point-to-points in Virginia for nearly a decade. The subject of the cheer is Roy Graham’s Boca Bird. The 16-year-old ‘Bird’, embarking upon his 10th year of racing, enjoys loafing early in the race, then gaining momentum, with his move to the front accompanied by cheers from his legion of fans.
Boca Bird’s owner and rider “Tennessee” Graham, now 42, is equally popular. A native of Nashville, Roy rode gaited horses in his youth. Stationed in Northern Virginia while in the Army, it was there that he met his wife, Anne, as well as being introduced to thoroughbred horses.
