In case the county’s reimbursement is cut from the state budget, Guest has pursued an alternative solution to the jail space problem that began last March when Fauquier Sheriff Luther Cox announced he would no longer accept Rappahannock prisoners.
Under Department of Corrections’ standards, Rappahannock’s jail qualifies as a lock-up only. State law currently limits the amount of time a prisoner may be held in a lock-up to 12 hours.
Earlier in the session, Guest introduced a bill to change the definition of lockup. Passed by the House, it cleared the Senate’s Rehabilitation Committee by a narrow margin of 8-6 and on Monday, passed the full Senate, 25-14. The bill now goes to the governor.
