same conditions, run at several point-to-points or hunt meets, for a championship at the end of the season. At the Virginia point-to-points the oldest and best known is the Seven Comers Series for owner-riders over timber. There is also the First Colony Series for owner-riders over hurdles.
At the NSHA meetings there are the Maryland timber championship races, including the Maryland Hunt Cup and also a series of flat races for amateurs, colloquially referred to as “bumper” races. Two of these are held in Virginia—at Middleburg and at Morven Park.
There are 10 point-to-point races in the local northern Virginia area which are run in the spring at the end of the fox hunting season. The national hunt meets are held both in the spring and in the fall, with eight of the 33 being run in Virginiathe greatest number of any state.
