In 1967 King of Spades won the inaugural running of the Eustis Cup, with Dr. John R. S. Fisher substituting for Dr. Rogers, who was out with an injury. Rogers rode Spades to victory in McCoy’s silks in the 1970 race, and after reverting to his ownership Spades won the point-topoint classic in 1971, ’72 (Russell Jones up) and ’73, the latter being the most thrilling of all Eustis Cups.
Fourteen at the time, King of Spades led in the 1973 race for most of the four-mile route, jumping brilliantly. Dr. Rogers, in the twilight of a career as a race rider which spanned three decades, was equally impressive.
