Piedmont
In every kind of competition, there is always that ‘first time’. Susan recalls hers. “The Piedmont race course is a sentimental favorite of mine. It was my first race course. Somehow I placed in that first race. Despite losing a stirrup, having to jump without it, going way wide and wasting ground, and accelerating to fast, too soon.
“I was the ‘new kid in town’ then. What did I know? I had a ball. I was hooked. Dr. Joe Rogers came back to the van after that first race to see how the horse and new rider were doing. I was euphoric. He said, ‘That adrenalin you’re running on will last about a week. Then it will be time to race again. And it was.”
