a horse named Garden Games.
My parents, who are not at all horsey, and at a loss to explain how their daughter became so, came to watch. They were enthralled. They watched me take an unexpected second (they expected me to win), in the ladies race, and saw me heartily congratulate the winner, my friend Patti Cassel. Then they watched me take an unexpected win, against the men, professionals and amateurs, on a strange horse, who had to be led kicking and jumping in place, to the start.
“My only instruction from the owner before the race was to win, and from the trainer who suggested that I leave him alone at his fences...I’d ‘feel the horse pull me into them.’ Oh,how true! The horse was a brute. Who was I to argue?! It was a wonderful experience and happened to work out in my favor, against a group of different riders. They did not let me win, they just never expected me to.”
