right and headed for an in-andout set up just inside the tree line. The coops were set at an angle, so the going slowed, giving me time to relax a bit. After those obstacles, the going got even slower. We were up on Mason now and had to navigate some narrow, slippery trails to get round it. V

We were in no hurry. We had entered for optimum time, but Moody and I knew we were just racing for the fun of it...it being my first time out and all.

My legs were beginning to fail. I prayed they wouldn’t give out before I finished.

We wound around the mountain, descending slowly, and finally arrived at what I call the mule field. Hopping over a little post and rail that barred the mule’s exit when the animal was in residence, we galloped toward the next fence. Tears pouring down my face, I slowed to see a stream up ahead. Just beyond it lay the coop, and just beyond that the steeplechase course.

Lily popped the coop and, with ever-weakening muscles, I wound up on her neck.
