Is Rejected

For the second consecutive year, the General Laws Committee of the House of Delegates killed a bill last week which would have designated Jan. 15, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as a state holiday.
The measure was rejected by a resounding vote of 7-13 in the 20-member committee. The nearly two-toone margin of defeat was ironic.
Earlier in the legislative session the Senate had approved the bill by an almost identical percentage margin. Twenty-four of the senators had voted for it with 12 voting in opposition.
Probably no item of legislation to come before the General Assembly this year had stirred the passions of both its supporters and opponents more profoundly.
The defeat came after an emotional two-and-ahalf hour public hearing during which the often-repeated arguments for and against the bill were again voiced.
