Among these are the Piedmont Fox Hounds’ Rokeby Bowl at three and a half miles, celebrating its 42nd running this year. It has as former winning riders such legendary names as Crompton “Tommy” Smith and Louis “Paddy” Neilson...
Another is Oatlands’ Eustis Cup, which at four miles is the longest point-to-point race, and is sometimes used as a prep for the Virginia Gold Cup. Loudoun Hunt’s MFH Dr. Joe Rogers has won the Eustis Cup three times. Ordinarily point-to-point races do not carry a purse; one of the few exceptions is the Eustis Cup.
On the other hand there are currently 15 stakes races over hurdles at the NHSA meetings that have purses ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. The most prestigious is the Colonial Cup at Camden, S. C., followed by the International Gold Cup at Rolling Rock, Pa. There are also races at the major tracks sanctioned by NSHA, and two of the great classics are the Temple Gwathmey at Belmont Park and the Turf Writers at Saratoga Springs.
