The adventure of race riding, like the thrill of the chase, knows few age limits. One of the most popular and accomplished stars on the Virginia point-to-point circuit, Randy Rouse, is in his mid ’60’s and still going strong. Meanwhile a new young light glows on the horizon, already with so many wins to her credit, she is hard pressed to readily deliver an exact figure.
Point-to-point racing and fox hunting have an appeal that is almost universal, and many youngsters still in pony club are already out there riding to win, right alongside some of the veterans of the chase.
Dawn Dugan, age 13,is one of these, along with several other pony clubbers, both current and alumni. Dawn has been racing for four years, “ever since I began hunting when I was nine.”
She belongs to the CasanovaWarrenton Pony Club and hunts with Old Dominion and Bull Run Hunts, with her mother, Vicki Dugan, who, she says “has been hunting for decades”. (According tp Vicki, it’s only been two!)
Still growing, Dawn has had a different size pony each year since she began racing, but is eager to tell the story of her current mount, Sharp Start, whom she calls her “Easter pony”.
