Presidential candidates who have not yet made the Chicago trip may be hard pressed to find additional candidates and may have to sign on as co-sponsors of candidates already endorsed.

A second significant difference from earlier campaigns that seems to be emerging is that not one of the candidates is offering himself as the party’s candidate, that is, the current party, but rather as the candidate of the party of the past; possibly of the future, but not of the present.

None of the tentatively announced candidates is, with the exception of Senator Hollings of South Carolina, running as himself, but rather as a stand-in, a representative, a re-incamation, of former Democratic presidents or Democratic presidential candidates. Walter Mondale represents
