(Continued irom rage 1) Whiteman gave the workshoppers two minutes to rehearse and asked each group to cut its scene to a minute, 45 seconds. It was the beginning of a theatrical diet. Next, he directed that the scenes be limited to a minute, then 45 seconds, 30 seconds, and finally a bare ten, with a couple of minutes to practice between each step.
The exercise demonstrated exactly what the essential elements in a script are. It made the actors use facial expressions and body language as well as dialogue to cram a message into a few precious seconds. Timing the groups with his stop watch, Whiteman intoned “15 seconds of ugly fat,” “20 seconds of ugly fat,” “three seconds of ugly fat” from his seat in a front row. He enlisted the waiting their turn workshoppers to tell their fellow actors where the ugly fat was hidden in each group’s offering, soon everyone had adopted Whiteman's buzz word. Spectators and participants clapped enthusiastically each time a trio hit the limit exactly and moaned when Whiteman’s verdict of “ugly fat” or “too lean”sounded.
