Susan seems to relax as she recalls the fourth race meet on the schedule. “Warrenton is kind of like a merry-go-round. It’s fun for everyone. Fun to ride. Fun to watch. Up, down, up, dowTn, round and round.
“For some reason, the changing of seasons I guess, it’s often soft and muddy going. That slows the racing pace and usually makes it safer because of it.
“I sometimes wonder with courses like Warrenton, what spectators think of three mile races run round and round. I’ve been both spectator and rider, and I promise you that it feels faster on a horse than it looks from the ground. But I’ve wondered if spectators wonder, ‘what sort of strategy, if any, is involved?’ I’ve seen new riders go off in a hurry from the start and I’ve had more experienced riders look sideways at me, while the new rider zooms off, kind of winking as if to say: ‘they’ll be back, no hurry...yet’.
“ Running three miles is different from running two. And running and jumping is different from just running. The timing is an art some people never acquire,” continues Susan, who obviously has given a lot of thought to the strategy of racing over fences.
