“I bought this hotel from two fellas—Myron Palmer and Andrew Kozic. It was known before they had it and still is, legally, as Hotel Lee Highway,” commented owner Loomis recently.
Though he kept the name and even built the sign for it, Loomis’s hotel isn’t a hotel now but an apartment building with five residents. Through research Loomis has managed to piece together a time line of the building’s 163 year history which began in 1820 with its completion.
“In the beginning, it was a private residence,” noted Loomis. “John Hopkins, the original owner, sold it in 1830, and it was sometime after that that it became a hotel. I guess more people were passing through Sperryville and business in town picked up. (At one time) it was known as the Sperryville Inn. There used to be a power lot back there by the Thornton River that generated electricity. In the 1920’s W. E. Sebert owned it. It was known as the Hotel Heisel and the place was booming.
