The Virginia point-to-point season, beginning in late winter, and continuing for nine consecutive weekends into the spring, offers continuity of sport, with competitors and fans often becoming friends by the end of the season, and some horse/rider combinations gaining virtual super star status over the years.
Here, a review will be made of six horse/rider combinations which have particularly contributed to the success of point-topoint racing in Virginia. This is not a “handicap” of the relative abilities of horses and riders, for it is impossible to compare the merits of competitors from different eras. Rather, this is a review of combinations which have had a special fan appeal, including Logistics/Col. Bertrand de Nadaillac; Lenoso/Arch Kingsley; King of Spades/Dr. Joe Rogers; Never Delay/Patti Cassel; Boca Bird/Roy “Tennessee” Graham; and Cinzano/Randy Rouse.
