was April iyvs and the two-year-old chestnut gelding was on the auction block at Marshall. He had a runny nose and shipping fever. No beauty, he. A sure bet to go to the “killers”. But there was something about him that the nine-year-old and her mother couldn’t resist. And home he went to the Dugans’ Sterling Manor Farm in Catharpin. A good home, good food, and proper veterinary attention soon began to pay off, and Dawn had herself a racing prospect.
Dawn already has two old fashioned wins to her credit, both at Orange County in 1980 and 1982, as well as six point-topoint wins on the flat, and one in a sanctioned meet, the race for juniors at Foxfield in 1981.
This year the two will be seen again in the hunter pairs series, along with another pony club member, Amy Krenytzky. Amy will be making her debut racing over fences on Winter Warning, the veteran large pony who also belongs to Dawn.
Admittedly out to win the junior division of the pairs series this year, Dawn and Amy will be evenly matched against at least one other CWPC team, that of Jeanne Fendley, veteran race rider, with newcomer Bonnie Tweed.
