It became obvious that if steeplechasing was to prosper on a professional level, some method of organization was needed. In the latter part of the 19th century, to fill this need, the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association was formed by August Belmont II.
One of the most important differences between point-topoint races and the sanctioned meets,in addition to their structural differences, is in the amount of the purses. Few pointto-point races offer anything in the way of awards other than a trophy, a handsome trophy, but still, just a trophy. On the other hand the sanctioned meets offer purses of great value, in addition to the prestige of a trophy.
