Never Delay
In 1972 Patti Cassel purchased a five-year-old brown thoroughbred for $500. The 16hand mare was in poor shape at the time, and Patti recalls, “she was light in flesh, her feet were terrible and one hock was puffy, but she moved like a Cadillac.”
After nursing her back to health, Patti took Never Delay out with the Bull Run Hunt, where they caught the eye of Mrs. Richard K. Jones, MFH, and Wally Dennis, whipper-in. These ladies enjoyed riding in point-to-points, and they planted the idea that Never Delay was a race prospect.
Her appetite for racing whetted by winning a hunter pace event, in 1973 Patti and Never Dfclay debuted in the ladies’ timber race at Casanova. Patti reminisces, “We were in contention at the last fence, in fact I thought we’d win. I asked
