Steeplechasing was catching on. By 1869 a $25 sweepstake with $1000 added inaugurated steeplechasing at Jerome Park, and the first steeplechase at Pimlico was held on October 28, 1873. As the popularity of racing over fences grew at the flat tracks, so did the hunts take notice. In 1882 the Myopia Hunt Club put on a steeplechase meeting, and in 1883 the Meadow Brook Hunt Club followed suit. In the spring of 1884, the inaugural running of the Great Long Island Steeplechase, an imitator of the Grand National at Aintree, England, was held, and the first Maryland Hunt Cup was contested in 1894.
As the popularity of racing over fences grew with the huntsponsored meets, run strictly by amateurs, so did the professional meets go into a decline, with purses growing ever smaller.
