suslovic said that each one of our local hospitals depends entirely on Red Cross blood supplies for their patients. Surely one of our neighbors or friends will need this care - care that money can’t buy, that doctors can’t supply, that only a responsible and generous community can provide.
Suslovic said that people do respond immediately when disaster strikes. After the Air Florida crash in Washington folks flocked to the hospitals with offers of blood for the victims. But then it’s too late, Suslovic said. Blood needs to be on hand, typed and processed and ready to use at the time of an emergency.
Each year, during the holidays, local blood supplies reach a dangerous low. But holiday travel, cold weather accidents and the January-February upsurge in disease and crisis for the elderly, coupled with surgery that has been postponed to the slow winter months, create an enormous drain on available supplies.
