Bird does better when he runs every week. “Last year we gave him a day off at Old Dominion, and he ran like a dog the following week at Oatlands, but came back the next Saturday to win at Fairfax. It’s like he gets insulted if you keep him home, and I guess he says to himself, ‘Okay, I’ll show them!”’
“Now, don’t ask me how many races ‘Bird’ has won,” cautions Roy, “must be more than a dozen, and I’d say that he’s been in the money at least 75 per cent of the time.”
Boca Bird and “Tennessee” Graham have captured the admiration and support of fans, both old and young, but particularly of children. Following a winning race Roy’s entourage resembles the Pied Piper. And in 1974 when the pair won the Eustis Cup, the post race reception rivaled the excitement generated by King of Spades the previous year.
Then in 1980 Boca Bird’s season-long consistency won Roy the Seven Comers Challenge Trophy, and himself the ultimate honor as Horse of the Year on the Virginia Point-to-Point Circuit.
