The color, scarlet, which is worn only by members of the staff and gentlemen riders who have earned their colors, is easily discernible by members of the field who may have the misfortune to become separated, as well as being a sign of authority. On the race course, the scarlet coated outriders are clearly visible to all who may need assistance.
The hard hat is standard attire for all mounted foxhunters, with the only difference being the style. A velvet hunt cap with a peak is worn by juniors, (members 18 years of age and under), and also may be worn by members of the staff. All other riders both gentlemen and ladies wear either a reinforced bowler or when hunting in formal attire, a black top hat. These should be well fitting, but not too tight, and should be worn squarely and securely , well down over the forehead.
