Did you ever wonder what roots of a plant looked like under the soil?” the leader asked 4-H club members.

Here’s an experiment that gives a look at the developments of roots. It’s from Thomas W. Simpson, Virginia Tech Extension agronomist.

Materials needed include: the top of a plastic bottle; scissors; about a quart of soil; water; 12x24inch piece of window glass; llx23-inch sheet of thin plastic; tape; small knife; seed such as corn, cotton, or soybean; four bricks; and a mirror.

1. Cut the top from a plastic bottle just below the shoulder. Fashion three legs about a quarter of an inch high on the lower rim of the top part.

2. Pulverize one quart of soil. Slowly add water until the soil can be formed into a
