Maeyer’s favorite project is “spring chickens.” As much as she talks about 4-H, her conversation keeps coming back to those incubated Faster eggs. To her it’s the culmination of club activities that start in October and continue through the school year.

“Some hatch and some don t, she says. “I never smelled anything quite that rotten as the ones that don’t.”

Hut the chicks who make it through the shell are a delight to pupils and teachers alike. That’s why the spring chickens project is repeated at various grade levels in 4H clubs and never gets boring.

Maevers says the incubators are expensive and the school system would have to finance such projects some other way — if they were taught at all.

Maeyers thinks the 4-H is doing a great service for Rappahannock County Schools.
