Helen Holshuh added that, for most of Rappahannock’s 150 years, one of the main jobs of women was to bear large families of 10 or 12 children. “By the time the oldest son was ready to take charge of the farm, the father was still going strong and the mother was raising more infants. They knew a farm couldn’t be divided in 12 parts, so inevitably the oldest son was pushed out, with the youngest son inheriting the farm. The others got money.”
