Town Boundaries
Commonwealth's attorney Douglas Baumgardner, acting as counsel for the Town of Washington, asked the board for approval to petition the circuit court to formally establish boundaries for the town.
He noted that Washington's boundaries were initially set in 1794 by act of Virginia’s General Assembly. In 1796, the legislature set aside 25 acres and directed trustees to lay out the town in lots of one-half acre each and to name the streets. Then an additional one-half acre lot was added by another act of the General Assembly in 1797.
On February 12, lb94, the town was incorporated by the legislature, Baumgardner continued. Its boundaries were also extended o(X) yards in all directions beyond the limits originally set for Washington.
