Horse and pony club leader Jane Naramore of Amissville says the most satisfaction she gets from 4H work is when former judging contestants come back to her and say, "Hey, 1 really used that.’’
Club members interested in going into judging must become familiar with all horse breeds, the parts of a horse and conformation faults. In competition, they must be able to rank a group of horses and then justify their choices in oral arguments without notes.
Last year four Rappahannock members went to state in the spring, but there weren’t enough in the same grade to constitute a team. They competed as individuals in two contests and Naramore says they did quite well although they didn't win.
