Rappahannock’s own Ben “Cooter” Jones is girding for an election that would return him to Congress for the first time since Jan. 3, 1993 when, after serving two terms as a Georgia Congressman, he lost there in the Democratic primary.
He attempted a return in a different Georgia district two years later, but failed to succeed to beat the Republican incumbent, Newt Gingrich, who went on to serve as Speaker of the House.
Mr. Jones is, as he himself has said, fighting an uphill battle in the contest to unseat freshman Republican Congressman Eric Cantor. Mr. Jones is self-described as a “Harry Truman, Harry Byrd” Democrat in a district redrawn under Republican control, and he has rejected any Political Action Committee (PAC) campaign donations, leaving his war chest—at least as of the June 30 Federal Election Commission filing—with
