1920s -1940s
When farmer William Grimsley Wood became the fourth president of the Rappahannock National Bank in 1929, he was thrown into tumultuous times, both in our country and our county.
While most of the country remembers 1929 as the year of the stock market crash, here in the county it was called the year of the tornado. One of the worst disasters in the county, if not the worst, occurred May 2 of that year when a tornado struck Woodville virtually demolishing the whole town. While several persons were injured, one young 12-year-old boy was killed. He was the brother of Pauline Hawkins Bruce (Mrs. Jack Bruce), the mother of County Clerk Diane Bruce. The tornado crossed Red Oak and destroyed a house near Ben Venue killing a woman occupant.
The stock market crash on Oct. 24,1929 heralded the Great Depression. In that year, total assets of all Virginia banks were six times the 1902 levels. But from 1929 to 1934 these banks suffered a decline in total assets of 21 percent, from $667,600,000
