Civil War Round Table will

Civil War Round Table will offer free samples of recipes from The Confederate Cookbook, including such goodies as Hungry Soldier Bean Soup, Southern Firehouse Beans, Sweet Potato Biscuits and Missouri Confederate cake. Cub Scouts popcorn, Boy Scouts snow-cones and other goodies will also be on sale.

Children’s activities will be held both days behind the Thornton River Fly Shop on Main Street. There will be interactive storytelling, presentations by reenactors, painting of historical flags, and a kids’ cookalong, which will involve making caramels from a recipe in the “Robert E. Lee Cookbook.”

The street fair along Main Street will include numerous vendors and organizations.

Among the items for sale will be Civil War prints by such artists as Mort Kuntsler, Dale Gallon and David Wright, historic Tshirts and sweat shirts, Civil War flags, miniature soldiers, war relics and artifacts, and period clothing. Mary Alice Puterbaugh, “the Warwick County Seamstress,” will display the custom-made ladies’ fashions of the Civil War era that she makes. Among the organizations that will set up displays and information booths are the Rappahannock Historical Society and the John S. Mosby Foundation of Warrenton.

Authors of Civil War books will talk and sign their books at the Old Sperryville Bookshop. The subjects of the books on the program include Confederate Cavalry leader Turner Ashby, the Union’s Irish Brigade, the battle of Ox Hill or Chantilly, General J.E.B. Stuart’s Confederate horse artillery, and a series of mystery stories set in the Civil War. A complete schedule of the author appearances will be published in next week’s Rappahannock News.
