Civil War re-enactor Kyle Printz of Culpeper isn’t content with a mere musket. He goes for a bigger bang in his role as captain of Carpenter’s Battery, the Confederate artillery unit that he will bring to Sperryville to provide plenty of big bangs for Sperryville Civil War Days.
The fourth annual commemoration of the War Between the States will be held in Sperryville on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22. Capt. Printz’s prize display will be the battery’s 12-pound mountain howitzer, which will go into action on Saturday in demonstration firings in the field adjacent to the Faith Mountain Company store along US 211 in Sperryville.
“I had ancestors in Mosby’s Rangers and in the 7th Virginia infantry,” Mr. Printz said, explaining his interest in the Civil War. “My great-grandfather was in the 7th Virginia and he was wounded four times.” The mountain howitzer that he will bring to Sperryville is a lightweight, mobile cannon of the type used by famed Confederate raider John S. Mosby. “It was also used in mountain fighting, because it could be taken apart and hauled by three horses or mules” in terrain too rugged for heavier cannon, he said.
Carpenter’s Battery and its crew of 10 men and women will join numerous other re-enactors in helping recreate the look and feel of Civil War Days in the historic village, which saw frequent encampments, marches and a few skirmishes during the 1861-65 war.
The weekend’s events also will feature live performances of the music of the Civil War, talks and book signings by Civil War authors, special children’s activities, and a street fair featuring vendors of Civil War art, artifacts, relics, Tshirts, and food.
All the events are free and open to the public both days, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The street fair and most activities will take place along Main Street in the historic village, with some re-enactor activity in the open area along US 211 near Faith Mountain.
There will be plenty of living history, military and civilian, at this year’s events.
