The date, Dec. 7, 1941, marked the surprise Japanese attack on the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the next day Congress declared war on Japan. During this time, Civil Defense Units were organized in the county.
Homeowners built bomb or fallout shelters. County residents wrapped bandages for the Red Cross and knitted sweaters for our servicemen. A gas rationing board was set up to ration gas and issue gas ration books. Air raid shelters were being set up in buildings around the county, including the bank. World War II ended when Germany surrendered in 1945.
There were 232 county residents called to service in World Word II and 15 killed in action.
