The horrifying attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 filled us all with gnef, shock and anger. But in response to the atrocity, people of our nation came together, showing tremendous courage and compassion and exemplifying the true spirit of community.

To honor the memory of those lost in the attacks, and to celebrate America at its best, this week has been designated as American Character Week. This special designation enables us to commemorate the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in a manner that encourages community service and celebrates the countless acts of courage and compassion witnessed by the world.

Character transcends race, religion, education, and gender. Character is who you are, even when no one is watching. It is the inward motivation to do what is right. And character is the key to true success in every aspect of life.

American Character Week emphasizes these four activities:

1. Discuss and study the lives of Americans of extraordinary character.

2. Recognize local individuals who have demonstrated exceptional character in the past year.

3. Teach young people about and encourage them to consider careers in public service.

4. Provide service-learning
