Wow! You almost had to be there. It was that exciting.
The first ever RCHS freshmen football team traveled to Madison County High school last Wednesday, Sept. 4. They played their first game of the season and they won. They Won! They weren’t supposed to win. This was Madison at Madison. This is a school that is all about football. But on this night, our , boys played like a team that has had football at their school for years.
They were down 20 to 8 at half-time. They had never been in a game before and they fought back in that second half as determined a group of football players as you would ever see on Sunday afternoon.
After the game, Head Coach Kemp Pullin said, “I’ve coached a lot of teams in a lot of games. I’ve coached in big games... in games for championships, but I’ve never been prouder of a group of boys then I was at the game against Madison. I am so proud of these guys and what they accomplished.”
The game started with both teams working out the kinks in their offenses. Madison received the kickoff and went three downs and out. The Rapp side took Madison’s punt and started with good field position around their own 45-yard line.
Unable to pick up a first down, the Panthers were forced to kick. Two plays later Madison broke around the right side and scored on a 55 yard run. Their kick for the extra point failed.
After the ensuing kickoff, Rapp started to drive with halfback Nick Compton running off tackle for 4 to 6 yard gains. About the time Madison figured out how to stop that play, quarterback Dylan Corbin faked a handoff to Compton and bootlegged around the right side for a 45yard touchdown.
Compton’s run for the extra points was good and RCHS led 8 to 6 at the end of the quarter. The Rapp side
