Buying the first
llamas
In 2001 Gwen retired and West Wind Farm bought its first llamas: three young males which they “practiced” on — grooming, giving shots, trimming toenails, and shearing. And they learned how to train with these students.
The llamas taught their teachers well. During their “learning” years, Mr. Humphrey and Ms. Hays came to love the show circuit, especially the Performance class. It is there that a llama proves that it is trained for “work” and work means parades, nursing homes, pulling a cart, and most importantly, pack.
Mr. Humphrey took Tuna Pfish through some of his paces in the practice ring at West Wind. Tuna Pfish climbed up and down stairs showing that he could get into a nursing home in order to do some therapy; he ducked into and stepped through a hula hoop, simulating stepping over a railing or ducking underneath a curtain; he walked between cones showing he could avoid barriers; and through a “tunnel” proving that he could go into and through closed areas.
All three boys have gone into hotels and ridden on elevators, but only because they are trained and they trust Mr. Humphrey — he’s not going to put them in a bad situation. They also are comfortable
