enactors will include the Old Dominion Rifles of the 17th Virginia regiment. This infantry unit will be making its third appearance at Sperryville Civil War Days. The Union side will be represented by members of the 53rd Pennsylvania regiment.
A Confederate camp and a Union camp will be set up in yards along Main Street.
Visitors are encouraged to visit the tent camps to see displays of weapons and soldiers’ gear, and to talk to the re-enactors about their hobby. Among the fascinating characters to meet is 81year-old Ripley Robinson, who plays the role of General Jackson, and is scheduled to return to Sperryville’s event this year as commander of Confederate forces.
He will be joined by General James L. Kemper, portrayed by Joseph Shelton of Frederick, Md.
Ladies in period dress will be on the scene, as well. Among the Civil War organizations planning to participate is the Order of the Southern Gray, a group of women who teach about Southern history and heritage, dressed in the fashions of the war period.
A music tent will be set up in the parking lot between the Old Sperryville Bookshop and the Long View Gallery, for performances of period music and brief historical talks on such topics as Civil War flags, women in the war, reenacting, and the war in Rappahannock County.
One of the music groups has many ties to Rappahannock County. Called the TriFolkals, the group consists of John Tole on guitar, banjo and vocals, Leslie Nichols on pennywhistle and vocals, and Bob Chappell on guitar, bass and vocals.
Mr. Chappell, currently Page County school superintendent, is a former principal of Rappahannock County High School, and Mr. Tole is a former county school board president. Ms. Nichols teaches music in her own studio here, and at Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy in Winchester.
Also scheduled to perform are the “Banjo Doctor" of Winchester, Dean Havron, and Ben “Cooter” Jones and his Garage Band, scheduled to cap off the program about 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
