The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution at their Sept. 4 meeting requesting that Governor Warner declare Rappahannock County a drought disaster area. If he agrees to do so, Rappahannock County farmers will be eligible for State and federal drought relief assistance, including low interest loans.
The decision to pass the drought disaster resolution was based in large part upon information provided by Virginia Cooperative Extension Agent Kenner Love on behalf of the Rappahannock County Emergency Board of the Food and Agriculture Committee.
The Flash Situation Report prepared by the Committee indicates significant drought-related losses in all agriculture areas in the County including: a 25 percent reduction in cattle production; 75 percent reduction in pasture yields; 60 percent reduction in hay yields; 38 percent reduction in com yields; 50 percent
