According to Mr. Hutcheson, early September is the “middle” of the canning season which runs from May to October. They'll be harvesting, selling and canning ripe red tomatoes until frost and then they 11 make a terrific green tomato relish. He’s hoping to get one more crop of green beans. He had almost given up hope because of the heat and lack of rain, but now with that last bit of rain the plants have perked up some, there are lots of blossoms and the thin beans are beginning to plump up.

Betty and Leon Hutcheson started their canning business about the same time as their beautiful long-stem hybrid tea rose business. The severe below freezing nights in the 80’s killed the roses. That was a heartbreak for the Hutchesons. The roses had thrived and survived several growing seasons, had extensive root structure, and had been hilled up for the winter. There were at least 20 different varieties all with the most wondrous fragrances in a rainbow of colors.
