The final two areas of concern for the Sheriff both involve speeding. Most of our rural roads are gravel and are not posted. If they were, they would call for 35 or 40 m.p.h. or less. The Sheriff asks everyone to voluntary drive with common sense on these quiet country roads; otherwise VDOT will post them with numerous reminders about legal speed limits.
Finally, Sheriff Sherertz reports, somewhat unhappily, a successful week with the radar speed enforcement program on US 211 at the entrances to the schools. Thirteen speeding tickets had to be given out. Of the 13 tickets, only two were county residents.
The speed limit, strictly enforced in the school zone when the flashing lights are on, is 35 m.p.h. The Sheriff warns that if a motorist is stopped for exceeding the 35 m.p.h. speed limit, there will be no warnings.
