was being tried for murder in the courthouse on Gay Street a few months before the Rappahannock National Bank received the go ahead from the Treasury Department’s Office of Comptroller of the Currency to “commence the business of banking” on Sept. 29,1902.
Meanwhile, 54 marriage licenses were issued in 1902 about the same as now, except back then the bride was required to reside here. There were no cement sidewalks yet, they came later in the 1920s. There were dirt streets, livery stables, and watering troughs for the horses.
