according to a notice in the Blue Ridge Guide, published in Washington, Va. on April 16, 1908. (The property the bank bought had been a “bar-room” in 1900 when Rixey bought it. In 1897, it had been “Dulin’s Saloon,” and back in 1885, the “Drug Store,” according to court records. In 1874, it was purchased by James L. Powers, a builder who studied under Thomas Jefferson.)
Meanwhile, there was another bank in the Ibwn of Washington. This one was called Stuart’s Bank, and was said to have been the last private bank in the U.S. It was first located in the building called “Rush River” on Gay Street where Sunnyside Market is today.
