Also, I heard second hand (I do not know for fact) that the county may be under the impression that even if they did apply the non-agricultural noise ordinance to these cannons that they think they would not be over the decibel limit anyway - which is somewhere in the range of 80 decibels.
My research of these propane cannons (and surely my neighbor’s) is way over that - these cannons produce blasts in the 110 to 130 decibel range, and some higher.
My neighbor has told other neighbors that he uses the same cannon that they use at Dulles airport to ehase the geese off the runway. This would imply that my neighbor’s cannon is louder than a running airplane.
I asked the county to come out and measure the decibels of my neighbor’s cannon, but the request was refused as there is no law or ordinance being broken. They are right - so I can’t blame them for not responding to my request.
But I can write this column in hope that maybe I can educate readers, and state that his is a problem that someone should look into further.
